Kiki Smith Artist Statement

90s outfit for party

Kiki Smith is a New York artist who works in a variety of media, from printmaking to sculpture to site-specific installations. Her interest in the human body and its elements is what drives her work. She has also explored the spiritual and religious aspects of life.

A self-proclaimed "ethnographic artist," Smith's early works incorporated abstract ideas into her figurative art. She moved to New York City in 1976 after she completed her studies at Hartford Art School. In the late 1970s, she was part of an artists' collective called Collaborative Projects, Inc. This group was dedicated making art more accessible to the general public. They used unconventional materials to create pieces that could be displayed in the home or office. They were exhibited in New York, among other cities.

Kiki Smith's recent works explore the relationship between humans and animals. Harmonies With Blackbirds, her collection, was shown at Pace Gallery in 2011 and was part Pace Gallery's Ode to Summer exhibition in 2013. Sueno, a 2-color intaglio print depicting a life-size woman curled in fetal poses, is one the most striking pieces of the series. Because of its awkward posture it is difficult to distinguish whether the sitter has a male or female sitter. It was a winner at the 51st Venice Biennale, 2005.

Kiki Smith has been working steadily for many years, but her work has undergone significant change in recent years. The themes she has explored include religious imagery, mythology, and the relationship between humans and their animal companions. Smith challenges viewers to consider the human body both as an idealized object, and as a living organism.

Smith is a recipient of several awards, including the Nelson A. Rockefeller Award from Purchase College School of the Arts and a Medal Award from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Her works are displayed in museums all around the globe. She has also been included in Time Magazine’s "Time 100” (2006) and "Art in the Twenty-First Century” (2009).

Smith was heavily involved in performance art from her earliest years. As a teenager she participated in Keith Haring’s "Times Square Show" as well as visiting Jackson Pollock’s studio. Similar to Kara Walker, she also exhibited at the Santa Fe group show 1996.

Smith has moved her focus away from figurative work to animal sculptures in the middle of the 1990s. She has created figures made from festive materials, such as black glitter, and a variety of other materials. Over the years, she's also been creating works based upon fairy tales. These works are called "prosaic" because they require an honest examination of vulnerability in the human body.

Rapture Smith, Smith’s sculpture exploring the relationships between humans and animals, is another Smith work. The sculpture is a sculptural representation of Venus on half-shell. The artwork refers to Raphael’s The Birth of Venus.
